Indeed today is the day the first Guy Noir mystery goes on sale across the country, Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny, published by Penguin in paperback, the folks who also bring you Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, Marcus Aurelius, Aeschylus, Jack Kerouac, and other fine authors.

Written entirely by Garrison Keillor and selling for a very reasonable $15, this gripping novel begins with the noted detective held at gunpoint in his office on the twelfth floor of the Acme Building by aging gangster Joey Robitussin who wants Guy to spill the beans about a wildly lucrative business venture he is pursuing with the former striptease dancer, now associate professor of women's studies, Naomi Fallopian.

Fans of the Noir episodes on A Prairie Home Companion will recognize Lieutenant McCafferty, Larry B. Larry, and of course Sugar O'Toole, and they will learn more of Guy's personal history growing up in New York and his romance with the Broadway composer Beatrice Olson who moved to St. Paul to write a musical about F. Scott Fitzgerald, thus luring the Gotham p.i. to the land of Lutherans. Is there sex and violence? Yes, some. Is it appropriate for Young Adults? You'd be surprised. Will it be the first in a long series of adventure mysteries? We shall see.

Be the first in your tribe to own a copy. Ask for it wherever fine books are sold or directly from Common Good Books.
